MARY McGOWAN
Chat Session Host
Mary McGowan has seventeen years experience as a foster
parent. She adopted three of her foster children, and currently
is a foster mother to two other children.
Mary worked at the North American Council on Adoptable Children
as a Parent Resource Developer with the Minnesota Recruitment
Project. Her job was to do grass roots recruitment for foster
and adoptive parents.
Mary also conducts workshops for contract on a wide variety of
family issues including foster care and adoption, family and
domestic violence, parenting skills, and family group decision
making.
Mary has her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Community
Violence Prevention and Child Development, and her Masters work
is in Clinical Psychology and Counseling.
Mary's philosophy about foster parent education: "I am a true
child advocate. I know how very difficult it can be to raise
some of the children who come through the system. The most
important thing we can do is to provide tools, support, and
education to maintain healthy, functioning families."
Mary also highly values the use of humor in her personal and
professional life and employs an open door policy for foster
parents and staff so that they may communicate to her the ways
in which they need support.
